List: Careers I have desired
I think that lists are one of the best ways to write blogs, when one is in a lazy mood. I am in a lazy mood, hence, a list-blog.
A Chronological List of Jobs I Have Wanted - from my early years to now
The Elementary School Years
1) Sleeping Beauty: Manifested mostly by laying on the couch every afternoon, hands clasped, eyes closed, and refusing to wake up until my dad got home.
2) Obstetrician: I would put baby dolls under my sister's shirt so I could pull them out and deliver them.
3) The Little Mermaid: Believing in the power of the imagination to transform, I made myself an Ariel costume out of butcher paper to wear in the pool. That didn't work out so well, although I did get pretty good at shooting out of my floatie ring and singing "I don't know when, I don't know how, but I know something's starting right now".
4) Marine Biologist: I actually wrote a book on the subject, with the help of some staples, markers, and a large Under The Sea sticker pack.
5) Archeaologist: After looking both ways, I would drag my sister along to the desert across the street, where we built a playhouse and looked for ancient treasures in the dirt, until a really big spider scared us away from ever returning to the dig site.
6) Playwright: With my best elementary school friends in mind for the leading roles, I wrote a play called "Italian Boarding School". I directed it and we actually got to perform it for our class. I think I blew my 15 minutes of fame right there, in 4th grade.
7) Writer of Short Stories: Whenever my class had creative writing time, I would add an installment to my series, "The Adventures of Elliot T. Neusen". Elliot was a crazy scientist who was also really, really funny. I kind-of gave this career up, however, when my friend Amber started copying my idea and writing her own Elliot stories (and not even spelling his last name right).
Junior High
8) Songwriter: I would spend a lot of my free time in my bedroom, alternately listening to the radio for inspiration and jotting down melancholy lyrics. I think this was my only career aspiration all throughout my awkward years. I wrote a lot of awkward songs to go with the awkwardness. No, you can't look at them.
High School
9) Songwriter who can play guitar too: I got lots of callouses.
10) World Traveler: Wasn't really thinking in the realm of "pays the rent" with this one.
College
11) Missionary: I went to my Intercultural Studies first year seminar with all kinds of dreams in my head. But turns out that I'm not really good at or interested in any of the subfields my major offered... guess I'm not cut out to be a "traditional" missionary (kind-of like I would have sucked as a "traditional" obstetrician).
12) Illustrator: I thought about this for a couple of weeks, but didn't follow through. Too bad, as I probably would have been a lot better at this than I was at Bible Translation.
Post-College
13) Counselor: I'm tossing around the idea of getting an MFT certificate... we'll see what comes of that.
14) Songwriting: I'm sure I can never get the bills paid this way, but if I could even make $1 off it someday... well... that would be immensely satisfying.
In conclusion: I was a lot more fun as a little kid.

(And my obstetrician outfit would have kicked this girl's patootey. I wore underwear on my head.)
Question for you: what are some jobs you have wanted?
